Bank Accounts and Statements

Banking brings your bank and card statements into Al-Mohaseb so every transaction ends up in the books once, categorized. You add each account once, then import its statement whenever you download one.

What you see depends on your role. If the menu, a button or a setting on this page is missing, ask your administrator to give you the permission listed above or to turn on the feature. Only administrators can turn features on and change site settings.

Add a bank account

  1. In Books > Chart of accounts, add the account the bank's money is in, such as 1010 Checking (an Asset), or 2100 Business Visa for a credit card (a Liability), if you do not have it yet.
  2. Open Banking > Bank accounts and select New Bank account.
  3. Enter the Name, such as Chase checking, choose that Ledger account, and optionally the Last four digits of the account number.
  4. Select Publish.

Clear Active on an account you closed: its transactions stay, and no statement can be imported into it.

Import a statement

  1. Download the statement from your bank's website as a CSV file (sometimes called Excel CSV or comma-separated).
  2. Open Banking > Import a statement, choose the Bank account and the file, and select Next.
  3. Check the columns. Al-Mohaseb guesses them from the column names:
    • Date, Description and, optionally, Check number;
    • either One amount column, where money spent is negative (check Positive amounts are spending for card statements that show charges as positive), or a Spent (debit) and a Received (credit) column;
    • the Date format, when dates are not US (03/14/2026) or ISO (2026-03-14): for example dd/MM/yyyy.
  4. Look at the Preview. Rows that cannot be read are listed and left out. Select Refresh the preview after a change.
  5. Give the import a Name, such as March statement, and select Import.

The transactions open for review. The bank rules have already categorized the ones they recognize.

Overlapping statements are safe

A line imported before into the same account is skipped, so you can import a statement that overlaps the last one, or the same file twice. Two identical lines in one file, such as two coffees of the same amount on the same day, stay two transactions.

Imports

Banking > Imports lists every import with its account, dates, number of transactions and the lines skipped as imported before. Select an import to review its transactions. Delete removes an import and its transactions; it is refused while any of them is transferred to the books: undo the transfer first.
